THE ITALIAN IMMIGRANT A Day to Honor All Italian Immigrants. This day is set aside for the parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and beyond – every Italian who journeyed to America from Italy, regardless of the route. It’s to honor those who sought to make a better life for themselves and their families, to remember them for the sacrifices they endured, and to thank them for the opportunities they provided us and for their contributions to America. It’s also a day to think about your ancestors, where they came from, and where their ancestors came from; and to learn something about Italy and your heritage. The History of Italian Immigrants Most   Italian   immigrants   had   a   difficult   adjustment   to   life   in   America,   but   many   left   Italy   because   of   the difficulties   there.   Frank   Sorrentino,   Professor   of   Political   Science   at   St.   Francis   College   in   Brooklyn,   New   York, provides   an   overview   of   the   political   and   economic   environment   in   Italy   that   led   the   immigrants   on   their journey    to    America.    He    mentions    the    challenges    of    the    trip    across    the    ocean    and    the    conditions    the immigrants   faced   in   a   new   country;   and   provides   the   background   for   an   informative   lecture   on   how   the   past influences   the   future,   and   how   the   history   of   the   Italian   immigrant   has   been   used   by   the   media   to   create negative stereotypes.
